Trainee course Ghana 16-24 mei 2009
In May 2009, led by the Urologic Training Institute 7 physician assistants and 3 urologists went to Ghana for an congress on tropical urology. Purpose of the training was an introduced on urology in Ghana. In addition the purpose was exchanging knowledge with Ghanaian doctors by giving presentations.
In Ghana, Hans de Wall (formerly working in the Reinier de Graaf Hospital in Delft) has been active as a urologist for many years. He also builds a urological hospital in Offinso with the help of ANANSE Foundation. Goal is to train Ghanaian doctors as urologists. In 4 days 24 operations were performed. The medical cases were complex urethral strictures, vesico-vaginal fistulas, a total rupture and congenital anomalies. Because this type of urological problems is rare in Dutch hospitals, this was a unique opportunity for us to learn about medical solutions for these problems. We met the patients and their problems in the OR. Furthermore, we were faced with unexpected pathology, such as a 5-year-old girl with status after pelvic fracture, who suffered from fibrosis of the entire vagina after stiching a bleeding wound. A vaginoplastiek was done. The whole team was thinking in a creative way about possible solutions in situations of scarcity of materials. This was experienced by all as very challenging and contributes to awareness of the entire urological process. This was experienced by all as very challenging and contributed to awareness of the entire urological process. This knowledge is applied in the Netherlands and leads to more urological creativity. A busy but very pleasant week ended with a visit to the new hospital under construction in Offinso. There was an impressive reception by the Ashanti Chief with all the inhabitants of surrounding villages. We had a dinner in Kumasi and a long flight from Accra brought us back to the Netherlands. In October 2010 ten Dutch trainee doctors urology will follow an internship in tropical Ghana. They will be educated by Professor D. Pushkar, urologist and professor of the urology department of the Moscow State Medical Stomatological University (MSMSU). Professor Pushkar is a specialist in the treatment of vesico-vaginal fistulas and has performed approximately 800 fistula operations. Urological problems such as those typical in the tropics will pass in review and professor Pushkar will perform some operations in the Sunyani Regional Hospital. |
